Kidney stones are very common in hot climates like India. Stones which form in the urine can be located anywhere in the pathway that urine takes from kidney to outside the body. This entire pathway is called the urinary tract. Kidney Stones- stones formed in the kidney and present in the kidney. There are 3 broad types.
Ureter stones- stones that have formed in the kidney but now got stuck in the tube carrying urine away from the kidney (ureter)
Bladder stones- stones in the urinary bladder, either come from the kidney or formed here
Urethral stones- stones stuck in the tube that throws urine out of the body (urethra)
Kidney stones can be a cause of great discomfort and may be responsible for infections or blockages that can permanently damage the kidneys. Many times even after the pain goes away with medications, if these stones have blocked the urine tubes (ureters) they can still silently damage the kidneys.
